I have a Garmin GPS 72 that I’d like to use with either MacCaching or Garmin’s Bobcat. (I’d consider trying this with MacGPS Pro, but I like the price of MacCaching and Bobcat.) This is for a school, and I could do the setup on an old PPC Mac running 10.3 or 10.4 - or a new Intel Mac running 10.5. So far, I’ve tried it on a new Intel Mac with no success. I just received a USB cable from eBay. It’s a GARMIN76USB.and it connects with the 4-pin interface on the Garmin 72. The USB cable is actually made by Prolific and requires a Mac OS X driver.which I’ve installed. From my first attempt, it appears that Garmin’s Bobcat will only support a “real” Garmin USB device - not a serial interface device which has a USB adapter like this.
But, I’m having problems with MacCaching which surprises me. I’ve used MacCaching before with an eTrex Legend using the Keyspan USB adapter and a Garmin OEM serial cable.
Two questions: 1) Can I get the Prolific (Kawa?) USB cable to work with MacCaching and the GPS 72? 2) If not, has anyone had success with the GPS 72, a Keyspan USB adapter, and the Garmin serial cable for the GPS 72? I work at a middle school. If I can get this to work, we have a dozen GPS 72s and it would make a lot of students and teachers happy - since we’ve been using these devices without any computer connection since we got them.
